HEALTHY LIFESTYLE FOR YOUR EYES

The health of your eyes depends on many factors, including your genes and age. However, did you know there are certain habits you can practice to improve your eyes’ health? In this blog post, King LASIK suggests some healthy lifestyle changes to make to boost the health of your eyes and avoid serious diseases and disorders.
Lifestyle Changes to Improve Eye Health

Quit Smoking

One of the best things you can do for your eye health — and your overall health — is to quit smoking. Smokers are more likely to develop inflammation in the eye and dangerous diseases such as age-related macular degeneration than non-smokers. Smoking also doubles the risk of developing cataracts. Perhaps most alarmingly, smokers are four times as likely to go blind in old age. Put down the cigarettes and ask your regular physician about the best smoking cessation aids.

Exercise

Believe it or not, your eyes are affected by how active you are. Regular exercise can help prevent certain eye conditions that are linked to obesity, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration. Commit to staying active and exercising at least three times per week for 30 minutes.

Wear Sun Protection Year Round

Unprotected, your eyes are susceptible to the sun’s UV rays even on cloudy days; too much exposure can lead to cancer, growths on the eyes and cataracts. Wearing eyeglasses with UVA and UVB protection is critical to preventing overexposure. In the same vein, try to wear safety goggles when doing projects that involve chemicals that could burn the eyes or small objects that could get lodged in the eyes.

Eat a Well-Balanced Diet

You are what you eat! Make sure you are consuming a healthy diet full of fresh produce and lean proteins. Dark green or brightly colored fruits and vegetables contain nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin, which are critical to eye health. Eating foods high in omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., salmon and walnuts) can also prevent age-related macular degeneration.
