LASIK Eye Surgery: The Procedure
Dr. Joseph King performs LASIK eye surgery in three stages. During the first treatment phase, he administers various vision tests and carefully evaluates the patient's refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism). Dr. King uses specialized diagnostic equipment for this purpose, including the advanced WaveScan platform. WaveScan software creates a 3-D image of the eye, revealing even the minutest imperfections in the eye's shape. These imperfections are responsible for obscured vision, and the goal of LASIK surgery is to correct them.
During the second phase of LASIK surgery, Dr. King creates a small flap in the patient's cornea. In traditional LASIK, the corneal flap is created with a mechanical handheld blade called a microkeratome. Instead, Dr. King uses a special laser known as the IntraLase femtosecond laser, which allows him to create an extremely precise, thin flap. Because he uses the IntraLase femtosecond laser instead of a microkeratome, Dr. King is able to create a corneal flap that is smoother and more uniform, reducing the risk of flap-related complications.
During the third phase of LASIK eye surgery, Dr. Joseph King uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea. He uses the 3-D corneal map obtained earlier to program the excimer laser so that it delivers a unique treatment for each patient. The application of laser energy usually takes only a few seconds, and many patients regain clear vision within hours of their treatments.
