DR. JOSEPH KING

Dr. Joseph King is an exceptionally talented LASIK surgeon who has dedicated his career to helping his patients achieve excellent vision without eyeglasses. As a LASIK patient himself, Dr. King appreciates the difference LASIK can make in a patient’s life. Over the years, he has performed more than 150,000 procedures and helped countless patients improve their quality of life through laser eye surgery. To deliver the best possible results, Dr. Joseph King uses the latest surgical and diagnostic technologies. Due to his considerable skill and experience, Dr. King is recognized one of Vancouver & Seattle’s top LASIK doctors who has helped many pilots, sharpshooters, military navigators and professional athletes achieve clear eyesight.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Joseph King, MD, received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine in Vancouver. Dr. King then completed an internship at several University of British Columbia-affiliated hospitals, followed by an ophthalmology residency at Case Western Reserve, St. Luke’s Medical Center in Cleveland. As a testament to his skill and dedication, Dr. King was selected as the Chief Resident in his final year. After completing the required postgraduate training, Dr. King also served an advanced fellowship in laser vision correction at the University of South Florida Eye Institute.

Prior to opening his own LASIK practice, Dr. Joseph King served as a staff surgeon at LASIK Vision Institute in Bellevue, Washington, and as a Director of King LASIK, a group of LASIK centers. He has also served as the Chief Surgeon at LASIK MD in Vancouver and Calgary and as the Medical Director of Restore Vision Centers and LASIK MD centers in British Columbia and Alberta.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Dr. King developed a keen interest in laser vision correction while in medical school. He has pursued that interest by serving as a clinical investigator for numerous research projects and by evaluating several new laser eye surgery technologies. In 2010, Dr. Joseph King became the first eye surgeon in the world to perform LASIK using a new custom Wavefront-technology LASIK platform. He was also one of the first surgeons to perform LASIK using the Zyoptix XP microkeratome, Zyoptix-TS software and the Bausch and Lomb Z-100 laser platform. As further evidence of his trailblazing use of new technology, Dr. King was the first surgeon in Alberta to perform iLASIK, a sophisticated vision correction procedure that combines the IntraLase femtosecond laser, the AMO VISX excimer laser, Wavefront cornea mapping technology and an advanced iris registration device.

When he is not performing LASIK Dr. King enjoys his free time with his family, skiing, watersports, travelling and distance running. Both Dr. King and his wife Holly have competed recently in the Boston Marathon.

DR. GARY FILLMORE

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Gary Fillmore, M.D., received his Bachelor´s degree from Brigham Young University, graduating cum laude. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Upon graduating from medical school Dr. Fillmore entered active military service as an officer in the United States Army. After completing an internship at Fort Lewis’ Madigan Army Medical Center, Dr. Fillmore completed his ophthalmology training at the Army’s flagship hospital- Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Here he received multiple military honors and served his final year as the Chief Resident. Dr. Fillmore served as a refractive surgeon for the military’s highly regarded Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program, providing these life-changing procedures to Airborne and Infantry Soldiers at Walter Reed, Fort Campbell, Fort Bragg and Fort Gordon.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION

Dr. Fillmore is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in refractive surgeries such as iLASIK and CustomVue PRK, as well as custom cataract surgery. He is certified in the use of many laser vision correction technologies including the VISX Star S4 Excimer Laser System and the Intralase Femtosecond Laser. Dr. Fillmore’s professional associations include:

DR. JAMES BAILEY

BACKGROUND

Meet Dr. Bailey, a seasoned refractive surgeon who was inspired to help others after going through his own struggles with poor vision and the limitations of eyewear. Despite years of wearing contact lenses, he faced the challenges of dry eyes and discomfort while participating in one of his favorite activities: biking. After undergoing laser refractive surgery, he now enjoys clear vision and the simple joy of waking up to a world in focus. Dr. Bailey’s personal experience motivates him to provide reliable solutions for his patients, so they too can experience the freedom of clear vision.

Originally from Tennessee, Dr. Bailey now lives in Washington with his wife, Ruth, and his daughters, August and Eleanor. He enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and camping with his family.

EDUCATION

Dr. Bailey graduated from the Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, Tennessee. He completed his internship at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and his Ophthalmology Residency training at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. After completing his residency, he completed a Cornea and Refractive Surgery fellowship at the University of California San Diego.

EXPERIENCE

Dr. Bailey has extensive refractive surgery experience across all refractive procedures currently available in the U.S., including LASIK, PRK, SMILE, Implantable Collamer lenses (ICL), and refractive lens exchange (RLE). He is certified and has performed surgeries on numerous LASER platforms from Zeiss, Alcon, and Johnson and Johnson. He is also certified as a clinical instructor for the Alcon EX 500 excimer LASER.

Dr. Bailey is a Major in the U.S. Army and is the Chief of Refractive Surgery at Madigan Army Center. He plays a crucial role in the military refractive surgery program at the national level and has contributed to policymaking and ensuring that LASIK is accessible to active-duty service members. In addition to his professional duties, Dr. Bailey has a passion for teaching and serves as a clinical instructor at Madigan Army Medical Center, where he trains residents from both Madigan and the University of Washington.

DR. JACK TIAN

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Tian is a dedicated LASIK eye surgeon who always gives his all to help his patients achieve the best possible vision so they can live out their lives with comfortable clarity. Specializing in cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange, and implantable collamer lenses, he has years of experience as an eye surgeon and has performed countless procedures. Dr. Tian is as passionate about moving the field of refractive eye surgery forward as he is with helping patients, and he has done so by refining and building new devices and surgical techniques.

When he isn’t restoring his patient’s vision, Dr. Tian enjoys hiking, creating music with his family, performing community service, teaching, traveling, making home improvements, and mentoring the next generation of eye surgeons.

EDUCATION

Dr. Tian received his undergraduate degree in molecular biology from the University of California and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California. He went on to complete his ophthalmology surgical training at the Flaum Eye Institute at the University of Rochester — the country’s premier optics institute and home to Kodak, Xerox, and Bausch and Lomb. In Rochester, he trained under Dr. Scott Macrae, M.D., a pioneer, authority, and innovator in refractive surgery.

EXPERIENCE

Dr. Tian served as a full-time Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at the Casey Eye Institute of Oregon Health and Sciences University, where he taught cataract surgery to resident trainees. Today, he is also a clinical assistant professor in ophthalmology at the University of Washington.

DR. PATRICK MUNSON

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Munson brings a wealth of experience in laser and lens-based vision correction surgery. In 1992, he had PRK surgery in Canada so he could qualify for graduation from West Point and service overseas. Thirty years later, he received the Surgeon General’s highest award for leadership in the field of vision correction surgery. As an Army Colonel, he knows LASIK can be as lifesaving as it is life-changing for many of his patients. Dr. Munson is humbled by the patients who entrust their eyes to his care. He is dedicated to providing safe and effective vision correction solutions to meet each patient’s needs and lifestyle.

Originally from Michigan, Dr. Munson has lived in the Pacific Northwest for over a decade. He enjoys spending time with family, outdoor activities, cheering on Seattle sports teams, and walking his labradoodle, Luna.

EDUCATION

Dr. Munson graduated from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. He completed an internship and residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, where he was selected Intern of the Year and Chief Resident. He is board certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

EXPERIENCE

With 15 years of laser and lens-based surgical experience, Dr. Munson has performed 10,000 vision correction procedures and supervised 20,000 as a Surgical Director for nearly a decade. He’s held academic positions at the University of Washington, University of South Carolina, and Uniformed Services University teaching LASIK, PRK, ICL and RLE. He is the only Army Ophthalmology Residency Program Director, training new doctors to become eye surgeons. He is a certified trainer on multiple laser platforms as well as the Evo ICL. His presentations at national meetings focus on improving visual outcomes and patient safety.

Dr. Munson helped establish a charity organization serving patients with poor vision in the South Sound. He volunteers with the Seattle Free Clinic, international humanitarian cataract missions, and trains eye technician at WAEPS.

DR. REX HAMILTON

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Rex Hamilton specializes in laser vision correction, refractive lens exchange, cataract surgery, and implantable collamer lenses. he is known throughout the United States and internationally as a leader in laser vision correction and premium cataract surgery. He pioneered many new surgical techniques during his 15 years as Professor and Director of the UCLA Laser Refractive Center at the Stein Eye Institute in Los Angeles.

Dr. Hamilton was valedictorian of his high school class. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude from Dartmouth College with an undergraduate degree in physics and mathematics, Dr. Hamilton earned a Masters of Science degree in biomedical engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia. He continued his education at the University of California, Irvine, where he earned a Doctorates of Medicine degree and received numerous academic awards and scholarships, culminating in his graduating at the top of the class. He began performing cataract, corneal transplantation, and refractive surgery during his residency training at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute. He has served on the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Preferred Practice Pattern Committee for Refractive Surgery, a publication that sets the standard of care for refractive surgery in the United States. He currently serves on the Refractive/Cataract Clinical Subcommittee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

When he’s not helping patients achieve visual freedom, you can usually find Dr. Hamilton with his son, who is a true master of the Rubik’s Cube! They went to the World Championships in Melbourne in 2019 and you can even check out a documentary called “Speed Cubers” on Netflix, some of which was filmed at their house!

DR. KATHY VUU

Dr. Kathy Vuu received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington and her optometry degree at Pacific University. After a short time of traveling, she returned to the beautiful Pacific Northwest and joined the King Lasik team in 2005.
Born in Vietnam, but her family immigrated to the United States when she was 5 years old, along with her parents and 5 siblings. Her parents have been a beautiful and impactful model of love to her, helping shape and encourage her to live with purpose and intention, and to invest in the things on her heart that would bare eternal value.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Since 2005, Dr. Vuu has been part of Cornerstone’s many medical missions team that have reached Vietnam and Cambodia, providing free medical, dental and eye care in less reached villages where healthcare is scarce and resources are not readily available. She serves on the Cornerstone missions core team, and has helped lead teams overseas yearly. Through all this, it has transformed her life and helped strengthen her values as she finds joy and blessings in the patients and children whom she has served, and the people whom she has served with. “You go thinking you’ll change their life, but in turn God uses them to change yours.”

DR. CHASE JACKSON

Dr. Jackson is skilled in customizing vision for his patient’s needs and using advanced Light Adjustable Lens technology to achieve superior visual outcomes.

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Jackson earned his doctorate degree from the Arizona College of Optometry with focus on an interdisciplinary approach to care. He helped establish and direct eye care services within Medical Center Hospital for at-risk and underserved populations via a federally qualified health center. Dr. Jackson’s professional experience also includes instructing as Adjunct Faculty Professor of Ophthalmology at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. He spent seven years specializing in primary and secondary eye health care and has a particular interest in refractive care to optimize sight.

When he is not serving within our team of laser and refractive specialists, Dr. Jackson enjoys paddle boarding, dirt biking, and spending quality time with his wife and six children.

DR. HELENA TZOU

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Helena Tzou attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from Western University of Health Sciences College of Optometry. She completed a residency in pediatrics and vision therapy at Southern College of Optometry. Soon after residency, she became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (FAAO).
Before she joined King LASIK/K2 Vision in 2021, Dr. Tzou’s practice included pre- and post-operative LASIK and RLE care, primary eye care, specialty contact lenses, brain injury vision rehabilitation, and ocular disease management.

In her free time, she enjoys exploring the outdoors, listening to podcasts, attending musicals and operas, and visiting art, history, and science museums whenever she travels to new cities. She loves sharing a meal with her family and friends either at home or at a restaurant featuring cuisine from around the world.

DR. TINA DIEHL

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Diehl is a native of Vancouver, WA. She attended the University of Portland on a basketball scholarship and discovered her fascination with the beauty of the human visual system while studying Biology. After graduating Magna Cum Laude and being honored as a Division 1 Basketball Academic All-American, she played one year of semi-professional basketball and traveled the country before continuing on her educational path. She received her Doctorate from Pacific University College of Optometry with honors, and has given numerous presentations in the field of vision correction, has been published nine times, and has been an investigator in eleven FDA clinical trials relating to Lasik eye surgery. She is excited to be home after practicing in Los Angeles for 12 years in the specialties of refractive surgery and sports vision as the team eye doctor for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Dr. Diehl’s world is exceptionally clear because she had Lasik in 2002 and has enjoyed 20/10 vision ever since (that’s twice as good as 20/20)! She feels honored and privileged to take care of her patients precious eyesight. She enjoys working as a team with her patients and their families to maximize visual potential through education and informed decision making. Dr. Diehl is focused on providing her patients with outstanding care and outcomes.

In her free time Dr. Diehl enjoys laughing with friends/family and traveling to sunny beaches. She is passionate about health and fitness and loves working out and playing sports with her husband, Mike, and their daughter, Gisele.

DR. MEGAN EBEL

PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND

Dr. Ebel received her doctorate in optometry from Southern College of Optometry in 2015. Before joining King Lasik, she practiced primary care optometry primarily in the greater Portland, Oregon area.

In her free time, Dr. Ebel enjoys outdoor adventures with her cockapoo, Saffron. She also enjoys attending live theater, visiting art museums, and hiking the many trails in the area.
