LASER VISION CORRECTION SURGERY TO TREAT YOUR ASTIGMATISM
At King LASIK, we perform laser vision correction surgery (i.e., LASIK) to treat astigmatism and other types of refractive errors. A refractive error occurs as the result of having an irregularly shaped cornea that does not focus light properly. Depending on the type of refractive error a person has, he or she might be nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism. Below we take a closer look at astigmatism, including what causes this type of refractive error and whether it can be treated with LASIK surgery.
What is Astigmatism, Exactly?
A normal cornea is shaped like a baseball. In a person with astigmatism, the cornea is irregularly shaped, and more closely resembles a football. Due to this abnormal shape, light that enters the eye is not focused properly; instead of being focused onto a single point on the retina to generate clear vision, it is focused on multiple points. This often results in visual problems, such as blurred or distorted vision.
There are three common types of corneal astigmatism: myopic astigmatism, in which the patient is nearsighted, or cannot see well in the distance; hyperopic astigmatism, in which individuals are farsighted, or cannot see well up close; and mixed astigmatism, in which one irregularly shaped cornea causes nearsightedness and the other causes farsightedness.
In addition to these common forms of astigmatism, some individuals may suffer from irregular astigmatism that is the result not of an inherent corneal abnormality, but rather of an eye injury, an eye surgery or a progressive corneal disease called ākeratoconus.ā
In addition, certain patients may suffer from lenticular astigmatism, which is caused by an irregularly shaped eye lens rather than an irregularly shaped cornea.
Can LASIK Correct Astigmatism?
Yes, LASIK surgery is often an effective treatment option for common corneal astigmatism. However, the only way to know for certain whether you are a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery is to have a qualified ophthalmologist examine your eye health. He or she can diagnose your type of astigmatism and determine whether you would benefit from LASIK surgery.
